Challenge:

An oil and gas well onshore Mozambique required the Installation of the world’s first 9-zone, all electric intelligent well completion in an oil and gas well. The requirement for such a complex completion was due to the significant uncertainties with the volumes associated with the sands encountered in the well, requiring data acquisition. The completion consisted of 11 packers. 10 sets of downhole permanent gauges, 18 flow control devices, and 39 timed connection couplings

Solution:

The well completion design underwent the various formal gate processes and was finally approved for installation following a Final Investment Decision. Following this, several formal and informal integrated reviews were conducted with the various stakeholders involved:

  • Regular weekly action tracker meetings
  • Preliminary Design Review
  • Formal Design Review
  • Pre Production Review
  • Failure Mode Evaluation and Criticality Analyses
  • Complete Well On Paper Workshop
  • Operate Well On Paper Workshop
  • Advanced Planning Meeting at the wellsite prior to execution

All of the above ensured the requisite attention to detail and resulted in a near-flawless execution of the well completion with 0.2% Non-Productive Time

Value Added:

The well completion was executed 2.5 days ahead of schedule resulting in a saving of US$ 0.75 million. The completion design will save an additional US$ 2.0 million in well test costs due to the reduced cost of well intervention for data acquisition and for zonal control, which will be automated/surface controlled by virtue of the intelligent completion.
